SSCFA Long Service Awards

SSCFA Staff receive Long Service awards

Colin Willcox – 50 year Service Award to Schools Football

On the occasion of the Annual General Meeting of the Shropshire Schools and Colleges Football Association held at the Shropshire FA Headquarters on Monday 23rd June a very special presentation was made to long serving stalwart Colin Willcox who received the highest accolade from the English Schools Football Association for 50 years service to schools football. In making the presentation, John Read, Chief Executive ESFA paid tribute to Colin’s dedication and commitment towards the delivery of schools football within Shropshire. During his long and distinguished service Mr. Willcox took on responsibility for all county secondary competitions including the introduction of competitions for girls and over the past eighteen years has been the driving force behind the highly successful Greenhous Federation Centre for Primary Schools that now takes place at the Shrewsbury Sports Village on Wednesday evenings. In addition to his work on the football front Mr. Willcox has given similar support to schools cricket competitions.

At the recent Shropshire Schools Sports Athletics Association John Beswick International Presentation evening two of the SSCFA Officers received Long Service awards for their outstanding contribution to School Sports.

PHIL BRADBURY – Services to Shropshire Schools and Colleges Football Association – 25 Years Treasurer.

Shropshire Lad, educated at the Priory Boys (when it played Rugby only), and on leaving school in 1953, joined the Shropshire County Council where he joined the Education Department, initially in the Enquiry Office, going on to work in Transport; Further Education and Resources sections. He retired from Shirehall in 1992.

As a sportsman, he excelled, including High Jump Champion for Shrewsbury & District, was selected for Shropshire at Long Jump for the All England Athletics Championship. In 1952, at fifteen years of age he was selected to play in goal for Shrewsbury Town Reserves which did not go down too well at the Priory Boys School. And he continued to play in goal well into his forties with local clubs Rolls Royce; Shrewsbury Amateurs and NALGO.

An outstanding all round sportsman. He still enjoys daily physical exercise through regular swimming; working out in the gym at Albrighton and cycling into town and still manages to find the time to follow Grandson Liam’s sports schedule at Greenfields school.

As Treasurer to the Shropshire Schools and Colleges FA,  the Association’s Officers greatly appreciate his advice, support and conscientious nature in looking after the accounts.

SSCFA Staff

Mark Hignett & Steve Wilderspin receive recognition for their contribution to Schools Football

SHROPSHIRE SCHOOLS & COLLEGES FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION close the 2013-14 season with considerable praise from the English Schools Football Association. John Read Chief Executive of the English Schools Football Association recently attended  the SSCFA’s  Annual General Meeting held at the Shropshire Football Association’s Headquarters at Greenhous Meadow. In 1996 the Shropshire Football Association and the Shropshire Schools & Colleges FA formed a unique partnership and two decades later now enjoys an enviable regional and national reputation. Nationally, county schools football associations generally rely upon the goodwill of a team of volunteers and very few have the luxury of office accommodation with a salaried General Secretary overseeing the administration. Whilst Shropshire is often regarded as a rural county on the edge of the West Midlands, when it comes to football the county certainly punches above its weight as evidenced by the Shropshire Lads (25+) currently playing professional football. SSCFA runs eight county representative teams with four for girls and four for boys and are managed by a team of sixteen current teachers, many of whom wore the Shropshire shirt with pride before returning to the county after qualifying for the profession. Two of this team of teachers, Steve Wilderspin (Director of Football at Thomas Telford School & U18 SSCFA Team Manager)  and Mark Hignett (Senior Assistant Headteacher at Hadley Learning Community & SSCFA Vice Chairman & Football Development Officer) have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to the development of schools & colleges football within Shropshire. John Read ESFA paid tribute to the work being undertaken in Shropshire commenting “ESFA appreciates the on-going work of Steve Wilderspin with the national U18 team and we are delighted that Mark Hignett is joining the ESFA Council”.  Responding on behalf of SSCFA, Alan Jones commented “Steve and Mark are outstanding individuals who ‘give’ so much to schools and colleges football development beyond their full time teaching responsibilities. In March 2013 SSCFA celebrated 90 years of schools football and during the history of the ESFA  no Shropshire teacher has been appointed to Council.”

90th anniversary reception

An Evening With SSCFA – Celebrating 90 Years!

SSCFA is proud to report on ‘An Evening with SSCFA – Celebrating 90 Years’ which took place at The Lord Hill Hotel, Shrewsbury on Saturday March 16th 2013.

Past County players joined a host of sponsors, partners, supporters and past and present officers and their guests as the evening sold out out prior to advertising.

It was heart warming to see such support for schools and colleges football in Shropshire but disappointing that so many other supporters were unable to join us on the night as a result of the 230 seat capacity at the venue. A waiting list of 50 received prior to an announcement that the evening was to be a sell out were regrettably unable to join us and we are certain that we could have filled the venue at least twice over had we not made the announcement when we did.

We are extremely grateful to all attendees and especially to our ‘special guests’ who provided the entertainment by way of interviews and reminisces with our very own Ryan Jervis OBE. Joe Hart, Billy Jones, Boaz Myhill and Bernard McNally all rushed to us from their games earlier in the day and another ex-SSCFA star, Dave Edwards, was only prevented from attending by a serious foot injury sustained earlier that day. Their attendance and participation was the icing on the cake and ensured a night to remember for all.

The traditional Irish bingo, auction (with celebrity auctioneer David Brettell) and raffle included many excellent items and the 3-course menu was superb. A number of presentations were also made including the induction of Boaz Myhill and Bernard McNally to our ‘Hall of Fame’ and an award to Alan Jones made by Man City and England number 1 Joe Hart in appreciation of his forty plus years dedication to youth football in Shropshire.

Charity was also to benefit from the evening with a £300 donation and signed framed Shropshire shirt being presented to Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham in recognition of the support they have provided to two of our County Team Managers in recent times.

It is fitting that the final mention goes to the ‘organising committee’ who invested much time, effort and thought into making the event the huge success it undoubtedly was. We look forward to ‘An Evening with SSCFA – Celebrating 100 Years!

Thanks again to everyone for your support both on the night and towards the day-to-day running of SSCFA which allows us to continue to provide a number of hi quality footballing experiences to the boys and girls of all ages of Shropshire!

Two New Life Members For SSCFA

Shropshire Schools & Colleges FA celebrated another hugely successful period in schools football in the county by making two of their key partners Life Members.

2012 shropshire homes presentation

Howard & Ann Thorne of Shropshire Homes and Dave and Maureen Pountney of Salopian Sports joined patrons and officials of the SSCFA at a recent lunch at Greenhous Meadow to receive their awards.

Shropshire Homes have championed youth football in Shropshire for many years as former sponsors of the Centre of Excellence at Shrewsbury Town and more recently as sponsors of SSCFA’s prestigious U15 and u18 county cups.

Salopian Sports began their association with SSCFA in 1993 as inaugural sponsors of the girls U16 county cup and witnessed SSCFA winning ten national championships for girls in the following decade.

Bob McGrath, Chairman SSCFA, commented “both Shropshire Homes and Salopian Sports have invested time and money to help improve schools football in Shropshire and we are very grateful for their continued support in helping to maintain the Association’s ambitions for competitive schools football in Shropshire”.
